Fire departments have long operated as regimented and hierarchical groups. The badges given to firefighters help identify their position (chief, captain, firefighter, etc.) but also their battalion and company or other organizational information. This serves a useful purpose while the men are working to identify them as firefighters who are trained, but also help in the event of catastrophe to identify remains so that the fallen can be properly honored.
Fire department or firefighter’s badges have a value based on condition, rarity, material, and history (who owned it when and where). Below are several images of antique and collectible fire department badges.
